At some point we may need to move you from one of our servers to another. What's involved with this?
Uptime
- Usually it involves no downtime.
- We only require the site to be not actively worked on while we transfer it as your changes will be lost (because they would be made to the old location only).
- It's possible (but very unlikely) that your local environment (your computers, router, modem or ISP) could cache (or "remember") your site or email to exist at the old location still, causing some issues for you alone for a short period.
Potential Issues
- If you are using a mail client such as Outlook (not our webmail), sometimes the settings you have configured may not match our newer server. Usually this involves looking into your IMAP or SMTP settings and adjusting them according to our kb article. If you use webmail, nothing will change.
- Important: features bundled with Roundcube webmail such as your contacts, calendar, etc. may not moved along with a server transfer. If you are using such things and you miss them with the migration, let us know and we will migrate them for you.
When
We prefer to do it sometime in the late evening (PST) on a day of your choosing (if needed). A specific time and date can be organized too.
Why
We usually need to move accounts around when old servers are not up to date for the modern standards. A typical Debian server last 4-5 years until the OS version gets deprecated. Unfortunately with Linux distributions, there is no way to upgrade OS versions. We are forced to install a new server and migrate accounts.
